    • The world’s greatest teams and most passionate fans will meet in Riga in 2006. There will be wins and defeats, joy and tears, songs and curses, official speeches and referees' remarks, national anthems and the chants of cheerleaders. You will experience this and much more during the 2006 IIHF World Championship, which will be held in two especially dedicated arenas:

    The new multi-functional arena
    Skanstes Street 21, Riga

    Arena Skonto
    Em. Melngaila Street 1a, Riga

RIX Welcomes You to the City of Ice-Hockey Fans!

RIX is the name of the beaver, the mascot of the 2006 IIHF World Championship. RIX is also the international code of Riga International Airport.

The Latvian Hockey Federation held a competition to find the mascot for the World Championship, and some 100 designs were received. Many of Latvia’s typical animals were proposed as the mascot – not only beaver, but also squirrel, wagtail, stork etc. After careful consideration LHF chose the beaver as the mascot.
